installing windows while multiple HD are connected...

hi. im wondering, is there any risk in losing my data, if i have multiple hard drives connected to my motherboard while installing windows? i have always disconnected all but the one which the os is going on, but would like to know if its would be safe to keep all 4 hard drives connected and just select the hard drive that i want to use for the os. i thought i tries this along time ago and when windows booted it told me that the other hard drives needed to be initialized, and another time it told me they had to be formatted be fore windows could use them, both times ending in me losing everything. thats why i have been only 1 hard drive while installing windows. any expeirience or knowledge would be great
 
You can keep them hooked up.
When you run the install disc it will ask you where you want to install it.
On mine I know what the size of partition that I will be installing on (It's the smallest) so I format that partition for the install.
When I am done the other drives and partitions show and are good to go with all the data intact.

I reformat a lot.
I'm going to redo this comp again and it's only been about 5 months.
I have 3 HDD's and Disk0 is the partitioned one, Disk1 is just total storage as is Disk2.
 
like mycattmaxx said you can definitely do it, just be extremely careful and make sure you know what partitions belong to what drives. i have been in a similar situation before were i had 2 drives hooked up and accidentally formatted the wrong one. needless to say i was pretty pissed.

i always just unhooked the others not having windows installed on them and hook them up again after windows has been installed and everything. just safer :P
