An addon controller is an option if you intend to keep the older system running for some reason like having a spare backup case onhand. Test Linux distros all you want with the old box for sure.
A newer updated build will solve a long list of drawbacks and allow a great deal more flexibility in the long run. That includes dealing with the newer even larger 1tb Green Power drives available. I'll be looking at a pair of those for the next since I work alot with video projects where there's never enough drive space.
