Installing XP on slave drive?

If I have a blank slave drive, with Windows XP on the Master. Can I install the same copy of XP (same serial #) on the slave drive?

And how would I select the drive that I want to install it on?

Thanks.

I think that maybe you might be able to do it! I think you will have to go in to BIOS and set your slave drive as primary and then install it and then switch them round again not sure if it will work but might be worth a try as in theory it should work if you think about it!

ok you can but what i would do is unplug the master, just in case you reformat the wrong one,

and leave the slave in there, boot from the cd and install windows as normal.

then switch it back to slave and then plug the master back in, as normal.

and if you want to change the names of the os's (as it gets a bit confusing when given the os choice menu,) send me a message and ill detail it through with you

I would think you can do it. Just make sure the names of the 2 copies are different like Darrall said. Edit the boot.ini file or use the GUI method to change the names.

Is it possible to just insert a disk and select the slave drive to install it on it? Or would that not work?

I don't see why not, as it is the same as installing it staright on to a partition, but once you have formatted a drive it might delete all the drivers and therfore not allowing you to use the CD-ROM! So I don't really know to be honest! But that is what i think so theortically it should but practically i don't know.

delete all the drivers and therfore not allowing you to use the CD-ROM
as long as the drivers are on the pc it will pick them up, if not then it will do either of the following

cd - standard cd rom
cdrw - standard 8x cd rewrite
dvd - either wont pic up, detect as a cdrw, or install as a 8x

as lazy turbo said, if you put the xp cd straight in then it will ask you which you want to install it on.

c:/master will be the top one whatever or however many drives or partitions you have, and the one below is the slave, select it and format and install, it will install after format.

NOTE: the cd info is gfrom personal experience, (results may vary, as in speeds)

So should I format the drive during the XP setup, or format in right now by right-clicking it and selecting 'Format' ?
