I got a problem, I have vista on my laptop ubt it runs sooooo slow so I want to put xp professional back on. I have xp professional burnt to a disc but it won't install on my laptop because it says it can't install an old version of windows on top of a newer version of windows. Is there anyway I can delete my old OS and clean install my new OS? I have tried running the disc on startup but it says non-bootable disc in CD drive... What should I do to install XP professional over vista?

Thx for reading.!.

You need to boot to the install cd, you can't do a fresh install of XP while working within Vista.

I've burnt XP prof onto a dvd but when I boot up my computer it doesn't allow me to boot from the dvd to install xp.
Sometimes it asks me to select the OS and the only option is vista, but sometimes it just says theres no bootable cd in the drive.
I have set the first boot up device as cd-drive.
What am I doing wrong?

Either 1 of 2 things either your drive isn't a dvd drive or when you burnt the dvd, you didn't make it bootable, but I expect its because you didn't make it bootable.

Where did you get the .iso that you're trying to use?

from my college website but i dont think its an .iso its just a load of files and folders that i extracted from the winrar. Amoungst them all is the setup applicstion to install xp. I've burnt it all to a dvd but its not bootable.

the file i extracted the files and folders from isnt on my computer anymore. it went as soon as i extracted the files. should i download it again and burn the iso file straight onto disc without extracting files? instead of extracting with the winrar programme?

Yes, pay close attention to the file name and extension, and keep track of where it goes.

If it's an .ISO already, your battle is half done.

I never open WinRAR, I just save the file to a specific folder, than navigate to that folder,
Right Click, and "Extract Here". It keeps the original file that way,
and it's much simpler.

What software do you recommend? ...

I recommend you to download the XP as an ISO,MDF or whatever format you find,(of course if you have the XP license),and just burn that image file to your CD-ROM disk using programs like Power ISO,Alcohol 120%,Nero and so on.If the image file is an ISO,(and it usually is),just simply burn it to your CD-ROM disk using the Power ISO version 4.0.
NEVER EXTRACT THE ISO FILE OF THE OPERATING SYSTEMS BECAUSE IF YOU DO AND THEN BURN THOSE EXTRACTED FILES AS THE DATA DISK,THE DISK WETHER IF ITS CD,DVD OR DOUBLE-LAYER DVD,THE DISK WON'T BE BOOTABLE!!!ALWAYS BURN THE ISO FILE TO YOUR DISK USING PROGRAMS WHICH ARE DEVELOPED FOR THAT.I recommend Power ISO version 4.0.

Cheers!
