intake filter?

In a weeks time these vents accumulate so much dust. Is there some kinda filter you can buy or make, and ideas? I'd like something for my pc tower and my audio fans so all the internals dont become caked.

Welcome to the club! I fight dust constantly in as little as one day's time! You won't want to use anything that can catch on fire or sees static cling(esd). And you certainly won't want anything that constricts the air flow like a paper coffee filter. The material used for filters in air conditioners would be one type of material.

With the twin 120mm case fans on the Antec 900 model case here I daily wipe the dust from the grill seen while pondering on whether to find some filter that would fit on the preformed fan/drive cage combo there since that's the main air intake. xoxide.com is a great site for finding things there as well as having the largest selection of cases to look over among various vendors.

The problem there even as seen at http://www.frozencpu.com/search.htm...id=f3mQUdZc&searchspec=filters&go.x=6&go.y=10 is that those are all preformed filters for case fans not vents. But they give you an idea on the type of material you can use if you can't find one that will fit inplace there.

If you don't want to spend a lot on a filter paper, you can use the Swifter Sweeper paper. Cut it up to the size of the fan, put it in between the fan and the case. It worked just as well. However, this filter paper pick up dust like there is no tomorrow so you have to change the paper quite often.

The term there was vents not necessarily fan grills if those are front or side vents on a case where no case fan is mounted or can be. whathehuh will have to be a little more specific on that.

I cut up a K&N car air filter that would'nt work on my new car, there cotton and they breath really well. I made a thin box with 2 small pc fans from old towers and wired them both to an ac adapter. one fan for intake and one for exhaust, the intake on the box gets filtered and the main tower fans are able to draw fresh air freely without having to work any harder. Seems to work pretty good, and so far theres no dust building up on the towers intake vents. My camera took a crap but I'll try and post a picture/s somehow.

Well at least you don't have to worry about heat effecting that type of filter. You'll never see the type of heat inside a case that is seen right on a motor or your hardwares inside the case would bake like a turkey! :P

Heh :) That's actually a great idea!

Being a fish guy, I have to suggest heading to your local aquarium store (or the local PetSmart/Petco if you want to save $.89 ) and look for filter medium. Specifically, Rena FilStar Foam30 media. It comes in a 2 pack and each pad is about 4 inches squared. You'll have to cut to desired shape, but it's almost identical to what came with my case.

If you prefer white foam, Eheim works well too, but expect to pay a bit more and it is teh uber!
