Integrated RAID Controllers

Hey all,
I was wondering how reliable RAID controllers are if they are integrated onto the MOBO.

SATA RAID 6 x SATA 3Gb/s offer by Intel ICH9R support Intel Matrix Storage Tech(AHCI & RAID0/1/5/10)
2 x eSATA 3Gb/s through JMicron JMB363 support 0,1JBOD RAID function
Additional RAID Controller JMicron JMB363

The ICH9R has treated me very well so far. I just deployed a P5E WS Professional with the ICH9R and 3 x WD Raptor 150GB in RAID5. It's a beast.

They are reliable, but they don't come close performance wise to a RAID controller card with built in memory.

They have pretty much got their s**t together.
Certain earlier PATA RAID controllers did have problems.
I do agree with OMEGA. Controllers with built in memory are far superior but very expensive.

It would make sense that RAID Controllers with memory built in them would be far better than integrated. But it seems as those would be for business type situation or networking situations. The Integrated RAID controller I have should be sufficient for my home networking needs.

They are much more expensive, well above $500 for a quality RAID controller.

I would not recommend them for home use, as you said, they are geared more for business and server use.

^ Not worth it IMO. I would just buy a 1TB hard drive for not much more then a single 150GB Raptor, the speed increase isn't really worth it to me.

I have been using Raptors configured in RAID 0 since they became available.
I have also occasionally tried the so called "nearly as fast" SATA drives in the same PC (my latest rig).
The Raptors have always spanked them.
I am at the point now that I can't stand the lag of other drives.
I use two Raptors in RAID 0 and I image them about once every two weeks. The image is stored on a larger, slower drive in the same PC.
It takes about 15 minutes to re-image the Raptors.
God forbid, if one of the Raptors fail (hasn't happened yet knock on wood), I can image to a spare SATA drive until the replacement Raptor arrives.

Anyway, just my two cents.
