Integrated sound and GPU problems

Hey guys,

When I first picked up my desktop from my buddy I had sound playback problems. I looked online and found a solution and everything worked fine. That was with XP Home. I then upgraded to XP pro SP1 and everything was still working fine. But when I went to upgrade to SP2 & 3 all my problems started again.

Problems:
When I went to play age of empires III a error message would pop up saying I need a GPU of 64mb or higher to play. I know for a fact my computer has one because with XP home I played it fine with sound and everything.

I cant get any sound from the computer either. Whether its music or sounds from windows.

Things I did to fix the problems:
I looked online for the specific drivers for the onboard sound and GPU and downloaded them. After install it prompted me to reboot. I would reboot and still no sound or GPU. I installed the drivers again and still no luck.

I figured the problem was a bad XP pro install and I just got Win 7 so I did a fresh install of Win 7 and still no sound or GPU. :(

Any help please?

I must say I've not had the best of luck with Windows 7 and drivers, so I wouldn't rely on installed MS drivers. Not knowing the computer in question its difficult to direct you to other drivers, but I'd try using whatever OS it came loaded with once again. Load the drivers available from the manufacture's website then confirm they loaded under Device Manager.

BTW, I've never been a fan of upgrading/service packs/etc. Either do a clean install or nothing. If you're copy of Windows is pre-SP2, I'd suggest trying to slipstream it.

Hi Rodoni

A great way to check for compatibility for both hardware and software is to visit the Windows 7 Compatibility Center http://bit.ly/4uZDu2 . I’m just addressing your latest issue with your GPU and Windows 7, and maybe a search @ the compatibility center could gain you some headway.
You could try installing the drivers in Compatibility Mode for the last OS where you had functionality…a procedure can be found here -- http://bit.ly/B0tCG .

Good luck!
