Well im going to be building a computer soon, and im just wondering
whats the difference between intel or amd processors, on tiger it shows that amd are alot cheaper then intel?
is amd not a good processor? is that why there cheaper or is intel just over priced because its intel? i mean if i can save 100 dollars on buying a processor im up for it i just need to know what one to choose
Ive been looking at intel core 2 duos becuase my dad has one in his laptop and its super fast the computer im on now has intel celeron 2.0 GHz yeah thats slow and i need an upgrade badly :P

any help is appreciated!

ok, possibly intels are good, but AMD's are great. get an amd processor, so much better. im only saying this because i have one, but its not a bad prossecor. havent had any trouble with it get a x2 amd 64 6000

The way it is, Intel absolutely destroys AMD. I mean, totally kicks their ass. There's no comparison. AMD laptops are absolute crap. AMD desktop processors are cheaper because they are slower, less efficient, they're losing market share by the bucket load and they're trying to entice more suckers to buy them with low pricing.

Friends NEVER let friends buy an AMD.

you are so right! Intel is the best way to go! I love my Intel PC's. My Intel compaq works a lot faster then my AMD compaq and my AMD compaq has a faster clock speed and still the intel is way faster! Go with INTEL! Intel is AWSOME!

i switched over from a X2 5600+ @ 3.3ghz to what i have in my sig, i'll never go back...

Whats your budge on a cpu?

ah really its way slow then intel geezs ;l
i just saw this video on youtube where the person took the fan off an intel processor and it didnt smoke or anything it was fine then they did it to a amd and it smoked and burnt out ;l man i thought i could of saved 100 dollars but no wonder amd is cheap i mean my intel celeron is running vista right now hard to belive LOL and this comp is 7 years old

my budget for cpu prob 100-150

Your selection of the cpu should depend more on the type of build rather then the brand for the most part. AMD did have the leading edge for gaming until the Core 2 Duos and Extremes came out. For work horse builds the AMD line does well there while it took them forever to finally get their own quad core models out. And many are now jumping on the two Phenom models available.

And youtube is the last place to find any credible information.

you guys also know that AMD first came out with the 64 BIT processor... so they might have more experience with the 64bit. I'm also not sure which one to pick.

ok to be honest, no1 is going to run cpu's without the heatsink so this proves nothing. Just like if u buy a car because it has a built in parachute. WHO THE HELL CARES???? IT DOESNT DO ANYTHING!!! i saw the same vid, and they were running a game (???). with that budget, get an AMD.
pceye has a pt, depends what u want. im not against intels or anything. all my previous comps were intel based. so by all means go that way. just dont do it because it apparently 'kicks AMD's ass'. i knw intels are prob better, i did my fair share of rsrch b4 i decided to buy AMD, but do i regret it?

hell naw

well ya know that AMD came out with the 64BIT processor first, which is way faster then the 32BIT of course. So AMD might have a little more experience with that. I also dont know which one to pick, but i might go with Intel.

That's actually right on the money. I have two burned out X2s here. Went up in smoke, even with the fans on them. Intel will clock themselves back when they overheat, or they'll shut down. AMD? *sizzle* *sizzle*.

Really, there's no comparison. People want something for nothing, or at least get the illusion they're getting something for nothing. Most people that preach AMD have no clue where AMD excels and where it doesn't.

AMD X2s have one strength... Megaflops. This has an extremely limited practical application. I do have a client that needs that, and thus for him I designed a stellar AMD system.

Otherwise? They're hopeless. I have another dead AMD X2 sitting here at my feet... And the other one at my feet was an X2 Compaq that went up in smoke.. I rebuilt it with Intel/Asus.

64 bit way faster than an equivalent 32 bit? Ooooookkkk.... Now we know how AMD manages to sell CPUs.. Much of their clientelle knows hopelessly little about computers.

Wow!!! People sure are loyal to their brand. Everyone knows that Intel is faster than AMD clock for clock (2.4ghz Intel vs. 2.4ghz AMD). However, AMD has priced their processors to match up with a comparable Intel chip in that price range. This is the only way AMD can compete at the moment.

That's the spirit! Don't listen to bunk!

While Intel edged in the gaming arena since AMD fell back there the crap about AMDs going up in smoke while Intels don't is simply of someone's fabrications. Going on 10yrs. already with AMD models not one has even let go period. One saw the 85C max due to piece of garbage 3rd party cooler and didn't go "sizzle sizzle" while the current model saw 107C as reported when the Zalman 9700's fan blade was stuck seeing that heat up. The motor was simply pushed forward to free up the fan and nothing over 39C since.

Let me see if i can settle this. Blow for blow, intel beats the crap out of amd. Hello, 45nm quads mean anything to you? But lets look at the price /performance ration. Intel has run into the same thing as any other big product. Your paying a crap-ton of money for the name. If i had 5 thousand to spend on a new rig, i would go Intel, but as it was, i had 2000 so i went AMD. My old rig(not in my sig) ran a 2.6 dual core and never even had a problem. keep in mind i spent 140$ on it. Where i come from, we call that a good deal.

thats true. Intels do clock back until they start to cool down. AMd's dont. you know why?

a recent interview:

Q: Why do you, Intel, start to clock back as you get hotter?

Intel: Because im afraid...i like to clock back like a little girl and not go at it. i prefer to lay back...im scared...

Q: how about you, amd?

AMD: Me? Nope. No clock backing for me. IM GOING TO GO FOR MINE!!! 100% of the time. KEEP THE COMPUTER RUNNING, OR DIE TRYIN!!!!!!!!
...............

that explains it all see?

btw, guys im just jokin, just a lil fun being poked. dont take it seriously

*amd is the sheeznit, thoguh*

for some, thats what matters

exactly, 6000 cost me $160, im happy

The 6000+ X2 dropped some $50 in September last year. It had been $229.99 at newegg in August. Now it still sees $169.99 at the last look.

I was very pleased with my x2 5600+. But when i got into benchmarking and overclocking, it just wasn't for me.

But for a budget cpu, and for the average user. I would recommend it.

It's not cowardice; it's called "Tactical Retreat":P

More on topic...can someone explain why Intels spit at AMDs so hard? More techical information and so on...AMDs do better at FLOPs, Intels perform better clock-for-clock, that's something about both brands... Advantages/disadvantages and actual effect of those on performance. Those are the kinds of facts I'd like to know, and I'm sure they would help heaps of other people...including the starter of this thread. I just don't find "i switched over to intel" or "intel rules" very convincing...

I only just wish I could make some sense...but no :(
