intel celeron D 2.8 better than a P4 1.6?

Greetings !
im currently building a new pc, i can get the motherboard and RAM memory right now, but a AMD x2 is too expensive for me right now, just as buying a p4 3.0 or more. so i have decided to build the pc in parts, my question is if i should get a celeron D 2.8 cpu as a provisional cpu (for about 3 months) or stick with my p4 1.6.

Hard to say, the Celeron isnt good for games, so as long as your not going to be playing the high end games i'd say stick with your P4 1.6Ghz for 3 months.

but i cant play high end games with my 1.6 cpu either so i am not looking for game performance but rather overall speed, specially in windows enviroment since my current pc(512MB and 1.6Ghz cpu) tends to get really slow or even freeze in the most basics tasks. In games department i would be pleased if the celeron performs similar to the 1,6 cpu.

People just like to hate celerons, it's kind like people hating dell :)
That celeron has the same amount of cache as your current P4 and more clock speed so if you can get a board that would allow you to upgrade to a pentium d later (something i945 based or better) then it would be a good interim upgrade.

also, we benched a 2.5GHz Celeron 128Mb Cache agenst a 1.6GHz P4 512Mb and the Celeron just barely got beaten in 3dmark05 (423 to 454) so go with the Celeron

Celeron Ds have 256kb of cache as do Williamette P4s. So without knowing if he has a northwood or williamette now you can't say how much better it will be but it will be better.

That's a overly large cache size that doesn't exist.

id suggest getting a low grade athlon 64 if you dont have the money for an X2, and then upgrading to that later. get like a 3000+ and o/c it, or get a 3500+ if u dont want to o/c at all.

Yhat has nothing to do with his question. If you read all of the thread, and mainly the first post, he is compared the two processer's. and want's to know which would fit him better right now. He said all he has the money for is a P4 right now, and thats in 3 months, and untill then he wants a provisional as his P4 1.6ghz or a Celeron.

well, if he's got a wil, then the cache would be the same, right? so why not get the extra GHz?
Yes, I was agreeing with you about upgrading. Just giving more information when the inevitable 'Celerons suck' comes out :)

True, but its a typo and the letters are pretty close.

It's not a bad suggestion though. Although he did say he wanted a Pentium D a few posts in, he did say in the original post that an X2 is too expensive. An inexpensive S939 board and an A64 3000+ or even a 939 sempron wouldn't be much more (it might even be less) than a new 775 board (i945/955/975 based for Pentium D support, must be i975 if he wants to be able to use a presler) and a celeron D

So I have a 2.6ghz Celeron now, pretty sure I'm getting an Athlon 64 3000+ and new mobo. Will I be able to tell the difference in games and other apps?

I have the celeron D 2.93Ghz and my mothers computer has a p4 1.6 gig and my computer is way faster, I can actually play some games on this that I cant on hers. Its not the fastest processor but it will smoke the old p4!

Yes. You should see a fairly big difference.

Its not really a question of it being better, because its going to be. The question is if its worth buying a Celeron and using it for a few months, its not like hes buying either a celeron or p4.

I personally would just stick with your old P4 and then just use the money you were gonna spend on the celeron on uprading the processor or getting it earlier.
