Intel Core 2 Duo vs. Pentium 4

Hi guys, what would be the GHz equivalent in a P4 of the following:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5600 (1.83 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz FSB)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7200 (2.0 GHz, 4 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz FSB)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7400 (2.16 GHz, 4 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz FSB)

This is because my mom would like me to look to see how much of a difference she would get from a P4 3.0 Ghz 512mb to one of the Core 2 Duos with 2048mb ram... Could you maybe give a factor? Like it's X times better than your old laptop. I know, not easy...

P4 eleventy billion ghz = C2D e6300...basically the c2d smokes any and every p4, p4 is old..you would notice a huge jump in performance.

What is your mom doing? Just using word and browsing the internet? If that's it then just upgrading the ram would be more cost effective. If she just wants an all around faster computer then it would be worth upgrading. If she's not a gamer I'd probably just add ram. :P

I can't believe your asking this, your not a new member here.

Why does everyone want to know the "Ghz in P4" on all CPU's? The C2D runs at those rated speeds, thats that, you can't compare them to the speed of a P4. The fact it any of those would outperform any P4 ever made.

Actually, I'm not really the one asking, it's for my mom... So that she can compare, cause she doesn't understand all this tech stuff. I told her you can't compare like that but she told me to try, so I thought I might as well ask here.

And this computer won't be for my mom, but for my sister, who basicly uses it 5 hours medium-intensive use per day, sometimes plays The Sims, but not much else... The current laptop overheats like a bitch cause my sis installed some major BS on it, but oh well... Anyways, if I can convince my mom that buying a new laptop is worth it, than I get the "old" laptop... And since I want it, I'm just trying to impress her by giving her numbers she understands, not like "Oh, it's a Core 2 Duo, really fast, 2 GHz...""But the old one was 3GHz???"

Anyways you get the point. I'm not that much of a n00b, but just a guy trying to get a free laptop   Well I can already tell her the RAM wil l be 4x more which will make a HUGE difference and the processor is the best mobile proc. you can get.

Is 1200 USD a good price for the following?

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5600
2048 MB DDR2 RAM
80 GB 7200rpm
128MB ATI® MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1300, PCI-Express x16
15.4 WXGA TrueLife

And will it suit the usage aforementioned?

Oh, and finally, if I get the "old" laptop (Inspiron 5150), I would like to upgrade the RAM a bit and do a fresh format. With all the Dell locks and sh*t, is there a way for me to reformat so that it's like it was when we first got it (with XP installed and some small progs)? And can I put any brand RAM into it, or does Dell have it's own brand... Sorry, I know nothing about Dell..

Sorry, I thought you were wondering :P

Intel has a numbering system to help people that are in your parents place. The Pentium 4's were generally a 5xx or 6xx number, and the Core 2 Duo's are the 5xxx and 7xxx.

I guess you could double the C2D speed, and say thats the "Ghz in a P4" :P Or you could say that it's a dual-core, so the processing speed is double (so around 4.3Ghz for one of them, hehe).
