hi..!
Im still confused here. I bought an intel core 2 duo box, and I just installed it to the mainboard directly without applying any thermal paste on it, coz I thought it was already preapplied from the factory.. should I apply some thermal paste on the stocked heatsink? if yes, which area on the heatsink should I give this paste to? thanks!
 
Just put the HSF on with duct tape and eat the paste. :P

No, seriously. Put a dot in the center of the CPU and spread it evenly across the entire surface of the spreader. Then attach the HSF.
 
And also make sure you put enough thermal paste coz you don't wanna see some high temps if you're gonna overclock.
 
so..., I already reattached the heatsink and put some thermal paste on it.
but still, no changes. directly after boot, 57C. should i return it to the store? and also, if the V-core is over 1,3V, is that bad?

Did you take the thermal paste off the heatsink first? Because theres some already on the stock ones, and most of the third party ones as well.

If the BIOS is reporting 57C, I wonder what Intel TAT is reporting, since that usually seems to be alot higher. And no, 1.3v+ isnt bad, but you could try lowering it if you want to get the temps down.
 
yes I cleaned it already.
I used a good thermal paste too.. but I forgot what brand.
could it be a defective CPU I purchased?

Highly unlikely. Are you sure you snapped and twisted the 4 legs securely into the motherboard? If you dont twist them then it can cause the heatsink to come loose, and raise the temps.
