Intel Core 2 Extreme x6800 vs AMD Athlon 64 FX-62

From these preliminary results, the Core 2 Duo's are shaping up to be quite a formidible opponent for AMD.
 
yea they definitely are. of course, they tested one with more cache and more frequency. i'd like to see the 2.66ghz placed up against the FX-62.. does the FX-62 support SSE4? because i can see it increasing performance somewhat...

it was never intel i hated. just the pentium 4. lol
i mean REALLY! pentium 3 1.2ghz outperformed pentium 4 1.5ghz. WHY

The main reason the Pentium 3 1.2GHz outperformed a Pentium 4 1.5GHz was because the Pentium 3 was only running on a 10 stage pipeline, which gave it higher effeciency per clock, unlike the Pentium 4 (Willamette), which used a 20 stage pipeline, which made effeciency go down, but allowed for higher clock speeds to be reached.

it still outperformed it, and they switched to pentium 4 even though it performed worse.
nowadays more people are realizing that frequency != performance. :D
 
see... heres the thing. the conroe was clocked 130mhz higher, and had double the L2... not to mention it was shared which is probably more effective in single threaded apps (gaming)
i don't know, it seems kind of like its not THAT much better.
i would like SSE4 support though...
i guess we shall see... maybe i'll wait to sell my rig :D

why didn't amd add SSE4 support?
Intel generally are the first to incorporate a new revision of SSE, then AMD incorporates it into their processors a few months after.

I would expect SSE4 to be supported with the upcoming AMD K8L architecture.
 
Correct me if I'm wrong but dont Intel own the SSE instructions and then licenses AMD to use it? Or was it SSE/2 only.

SSE (Streaming SIMD Extensions, originally called ISSE, Internet Streaming SIMD Extensions) is a SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) instruction set designed by Intel and introduced in 1999 in their Pentium III series processors as a reply to AMD's 3DNow! (which had debuted a year earlier).
