Ok just looking at som websites and ive seen the new intel chips up for pre-order. I have also seen the price cuts for the AMD X2 chips (which were my initial choice)

Intel Core 2 DUO E6400 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.13GHz (1066FSB)

Here

Or

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939)

Here

Both are in the 170-180 Pound range, which is near enough my budget

Ive heard such a big hype about the new intel chips on this forum, i never knew they wud be the same price!

Wot shud i get??

P.S. Its for a gaming rig

Thx

Deffinetly go with the Core 2 Duo. However if you could afford to get a higher speed, i would recommend it.

ye just reading som threads and basically 99.9% of the people say conroe is much better. This will mean i will have to totally re think my build. Will i need new ram, mobo, hard drive etc??

Will all this be out the same time the cpu gets released. Will it be very expensive?

The conroe uses a different motherboard then AMD does, and you will also need DDR2 RAM.

They have a couple motherboards that will work with the Core 2 Duo, however once its released (or sooner), they will have alot more available motherboards. And the RAM is already out.

Well, yes for that price you should get something good with the Core 2 Duo. Maybe you can also get the E6600 for that budget, or you can step up your budget to 850 Pounds, get the E6600, and you won't need to sacrifice anything while getting the E6600? Although, 800 Pounds will get you a great Conroe machine none-the-less.

yep... get the core 2 duo (AKA conroe)
its 130mhz faster, has larger cache, and has better architecture.
That Core 2 Duo E6400 specified isn't a Conroe chip, it's an Allendale chip.

The major difference is that the Allendale has 2MB of L2 cache, meanwhile the Conroe has 4MB of L2 cache.
