I don't know how many people know this but Intel OEM processors are not covered under the 3 year warranty. I just found this out the hard way today. On my old build, I came to the conclusion that my processor was bad. So I thought just get it replaced through Intel since it should be under warranty. I contact Intel support and they told me that only retail processors are covered under the 3 year warranty. What a bunch of crap:mad:

Know I don't know what to do with that build. I have thought about either buying a new processor for it and either sell it or give it to my dad. If I give it to my dad, I don't know if I should get another q6600 or get an e8400. He does not do any heavy stuff, mainly just office work, internet, etc, no gaming or videos. If I tried to sell it, I would think it would sell easier with the q6600.

Sometimes the machine runs fine and other times it will not boot. I have thought about overclocking the heck out of it and see how far I can push it until I destroy it since it is useless anyways. The only thing is I would be worried about destroying something else along with the processor. Almost everything else is fairly new.

Any other ideas on what to do with a damaged processor? Use it for target practice? Anybody every shot at one, what does it do?
 
I am almost positive that the processor is bad. While trying to figure out what the problem was, I have replaced almost every piece of hardware in that computer except for the memory and cpu. I have replaced the mobo, PSU, GPU, both HDD's, the cpu cooler, switched sata cables. I tested the memory with memtest 86+ and no errors came up. I put them in different slots. Did not help. I still have problems right after a fresh install Windows 7 64 bit. I also tried Windows 7 32 bit.

Here are the problems I have been having. Sometimes it would not boot up giving me the disk boot failure message. Sometimes I could just switch the sata cable to a different sata connector on the mobo and it would work for a while. Second, I would get real slow transfer speeds between the two drives, the last time I tried it got down to 2 kb's when it should be around 80mb's. Third, while gaming or running a graphic intensive program, I would get the display driver error.

I took it to someone I know that works on computers for a living and he said from what he seen, he believes it is the processor. I mean that is the only thing else it can be. Everything else has been replaced. I have done everything I could think of trying to fix these problems.

Originally I thought the hard drives was causing problems because I was getting real slow transfer speeds between the two drives, they are WD Caviar Black 500gb drives. The guy I took it to took the drives out and tested the transfer speed and it was fine. So that ruled the hard drives out.

Did you know that OEM processors are not covered under warranty?
 
Bad RAM caused me to believe my chip died once. fool me once, shame on you... fool me twice...

Take out a stick of RAM and see what happens. if that doesn't work switch the one stick in there with the one you took out.
 
I have tried different sticks of ram in different slots. I have ran memtest with no errors. I have probably tried everything imaginable.
 
since you're in the US i don't mind testing the cpu for you for free and shipping it back at your cost. PM me as I'm sure there's nothing wrong with your cpu. they don't just work some of the time... they either work or they don't.
 
I think your central processing unit is damaged if you have gone thru extensively testing out every component and you are still having the same problem. If you are overclocking put the processor back to the speed specified by Intel.

If that doesn't work buy another processor that is compatible with your motherboard and try it out with all the same parts you are presently using without overclocking.

Original Equipment Manufacturer computer parts are covered by the OEM. This makes me glad I build my own desktops. If you build yourself and buy a retail processor, you get a three year warranty. Don't buy Original Equipment Manufacturer processors unless you don't care about not having a three year warranty.
