Hey, im building an office computer for my friend. Now, i cant choose between an X2, or a Pentium D...could you please suggest which would be better for strictly word processing, picture viewing, internet browsing, etc.

Thanks

I you are strickly word processing, picture viewing and other basic stuff, then you can use practically anything, even the Celeron D. May be very affordable, but will suit your needs just fine.

thats true, but i would like it to be 64-bit enabled and ready for vista in the future.

I'd go with something cheap like a Celeron D like LaptopExtreme said, but if I had to choose between those two it would be the AMD, but the cheapest AMD X2 is $322 on newegg, and the cheapest Pentium D on newegg is $245. Its really up to how much you want to spend since almost any processor can handle office things like the ones you mentioned.

By the time you get your hands on Vista, your computer may need an update anyways. It's not coming in the near future, and when it does, many probably won't update on the first day. Also 32 bit or 64, it'll still work.

The motherboard combo seems pretty expensive, and can take up to 21 days to ship. I know thats in CAD but in USD you can get:

Celeron D 2.4Ghz-2.6Ghz ~$65
1GB DDR2 - $90
LGA775 Motherboard - $70
Total - $225.

im not going to order them, there is a local tigerdirect outlet store about 10 mins away from my house.

well if u defintily wanna go dual core, go amd no matter wat. they beat intel dual cores in everything .
hes right, as the PD uses p4 cores... and p4s get their speed from their frequency not their processing time. two AMD cores is definitely a much better improvement than two P4 cores! MUCH better!
