Intel PD vs AMD X2

I would say that it all really depends how much you would like to spend and what exactly you will be doing with it. If you can do it, the AMD X2 line is much better than the Intel Pentium D line (there was a "ring match" on CNET half a month ago where AMD beat Intel in dual core's for each type of work). But, alas, the cheapest AMD is the x2 3800+ which goes for around $325. So, if all you want to do is word process, I would have to agree with others here that a Celeron D might be a better choice. However, if you plan to be using this computer heavily (through professional applications or gaming), you will see a much better performance per dollar rating with the AMD line.

Just as a side note here to show how good the AMD X2's are, ExtremeTech benched the new Pentium 4 EE 944 against the AMD X2 4800+, and the AMD X2 won most of the tests, the Pentium EE won some of the system tests, while AMD won the rest of the system tests and game tests.

The motherboard combo seems pretty expensive, and can take up to 21 days to ship. I know thats in CAD but in USD you can get:

Celeron D 2.4Ghz-2.6Ghz ~$65
1GB DDR2 - $90
LGA775 Motherboard - $70
Total - $225.

well, price for Celeron D 346 3.06GHz seems reasonable,
+ ram 1gb duel channel would cost around $130-150.. (do you really need a duel channel for an office computer though?)
+ minimum $100 for a motherboard (agree, $160 might be too expencive)

well anyway,

I think im gonna go with the AMD X2 3800+

are you going to keep the same motherboard and a ram?
or have you changed your mind about that.
I am curious to know what you are buying.

I already bought the X2 3800+, seems real fast, I havent got any lag yet running 50+ internet explores + burning cd + downloading drivers + antivirus update.
