Intel V AMD processor

You haven't specified the AMD processor, but the only 2.9GHz AMD quad is an Athlon II x4 635. The i5 would be either the 650 or 655K...same thing at stock clock speeds, but the 655k as an unlocked multiplier or overclocking.

Tom's Hardware doesn't have those exact models, but here's the 3.33GHz i5 660 and the 2.8GHz Athlon II 630 in comparison:

The intel would be the better one, overall. However, the i5 750 isn't too much more expensive, and is quite a bit more powerful than the 650. They're $200 and $180, respectively. (assuming you're building this yourself...is this a prebuilt system?)

If you're ever planning to upgrade, keep in mind that going with an AMD AM3 system will allow you to upgrade to a Bulldozer cpu later on.
