Intel vs. AMD

I'm building a new pc with which I'm gonna be doing computationally intensive simulations. I wonder if I should get an Intel Core2 Duo or even Core2 Quad, or go with an AMD equivalent.

What programs are you going to be using? Are they capable of using dual or quad core chips?

If they can support the quad then go for it, otherwise stick with the dual since it is cheaper.

Amd is not up to the level of Intel's chips right now, so go with the intel

right now, the Intel quad core takes the cake, but my cousin was telling me how AMDs quad core is gunna pwn (when it comes out). I honestly have no opinion, i think both companies are great. i would go with whatever company gives you the most power for the buck.

I'm most probably gonna do a dbl OS system, supporting both windows and linux, ... I'm mainly gonna be running MATLAB, on both OS systems, and MSVisual Studio, and Altera Quartus II on my windows system.

I have an overall budget of around $1500. I need to decide on parts accordingly ... my main goal is high performance and I also need to save some money for a dbl monitor setup.

Looks like both programs support dual cores, but I could find no mention of being able to take advantage of the quad.

From your list of programs you are wanting to run. I think I would go ahead and get the quad core. If those programs do not support it right now, I think they will in the short term future.

What are you? A scientist?

I love my AMD... and if you're going for a budget build (ie under 1000 bucks with monitor) I would go AMD but when you're at 1500 bucks you should go intel IMO

Intel is simply faster than an AMD chip. I currently have an AMD 64 x2 3800, so I do not hate AMD, just stating the facts.

I have never owned an AMD chip, I have used them and they have ran flawlessly. I have always had Intel, never had a problem, so I will continue using Intel. I might try an AMD 6000+ on my brothers PC when I build it or an AMD Quad. If those get bad ratings and reviews, E6750 it is...

With a 1500 dollar budget you can def build it around a Q6600 and that would be your best bet

great ... and what motherboard and Video Card would you recommend (given that I'm trying to build myself a dbl monitor setup ... and probably treat myself with a nice TV-Tuner)?

Amd Is Not As Good As Intel Atm.

Simple as that.

I love AMD, would choose it over intel.

BUT

Intels Core 2 Duo are taking the lead.

And my money :D
