So I noticed this today on my random selection of crap waiting for someone to get ready (the blackhole known as the bathroom for girls)

My question is why would they rebrand the drive and sell for less? Where is the sense for Intel to allow this or do they take stuff out for the $20 you save?


Just curious as it seems rather stupid on Intel's end as $20 x 10000 = a lot of cash.

As far as rebranding, the kingston 80gb is also a rebranded X25-M, with intel you are paying for the intel name...and intel probably sells the ones that are binned lower than the ones they put their name on, thats just a hunch with no way to back it up though.

Not buying just was curious. Plus id need at least 80GB to make the move to a SSD (60GB would be my install of "needed" apps etc) I am curious what controller does Intel use and what is the difference between the two? Any links will be appreciated on the difference.

Intel uses their own controller, sandforce currently has the best/fastest controller on the market, and even intel's fastest drives struggle to keep up. Most of those drives are also available in a 100gb model, no 80gb sandforce drives as far as i know:

Hmmm those don't exactly explain much of the sandforce vs Intel other then faster writes. Correct if I am wrong here but wasn't the plus for Intel was faster random and a stronger algorithm that is lighter on drive.
The limited writes is what makes me hesitant to go SSD and there is very little info out there about REAL users.

Like I said feel free to correct me.

That was when comparing the intel controller to the jmicron and such controllers that were used on other drives. The sandforce controller is at this time, the best controller on the market for read/write, random access, and the wear leveling algorithms have been improving on all drives. Honestly any somewhat decent drive will have wear leveling good enough to last you a relatively long time.
 
Not bad I can't wait for the 100GB drives to hit the 180-200 range...will be a good day when that happens :) BTW any idea on when the next generation are coming out?

Well, the sandforce based drives were the "next generation", i guess the wait will be for NAND memory to drop some more in price and overall just the price/gb of SSD's to go down. I have no doubt that intel is working on a controller to be faster than the sandforce drives...that may drop prices on sandforce controller drives if it happens.

when the drives start dropping in price i would be buying a few for raid0, the performance of ssd's over normal h/ds is like night and day

capacity+price is the only let down of the ssd's, there so small and light you can mount them anywhere inside your case
 
I am curious Funk think the price would go down if they made larger drives and didn't focus so much on making them small?

Also is raid0 different on SSD? I was told if you had 2x500GB drives you only had 500GB of space....not 1TB. I never played with it myself. Also I would imagine that older boards wouldn't raid these very well would they?
 
there are different types of raid, raid0 would see you all of the capacity of the drives and improve the performance but there is another raid array that would basicly write everything to both drives (like as a backup) and you would only see one drive

im not all familiar with all the raid arrays

they are small not because they are made to be small its the fact that the componants used are small
