Intel Xeon E5-2620 vs i5 3350p

Hey there guys, I was just browsing through ebay and found an AMAZING deal on an X79 combo. $319.99 for an ASRock X79 Extreme 4, Intel Xeon E5-2620 and 4GB of OCZ Ram.

Now I had a few questions.

I know Xeons are mean't for servers and workstations and such, but is this Xeon still capable of gaming?

If so, will there be a performance increase from my i5 3350p? Or will there be a drop because of it's 2.0Ghz clock?

Is a Xeon capable of gaming, yes, however my guess is no, it would not better in games. Essentially all you have is an i7 with ECC memory support and a couple of extra features that don't impact gaming, all at a lower clock speed.

Whilst the hyperthreading is nice, because most games are only using 3 cores with only a handful utilizing more, it is unlikely that you will get the full advantage brought from having 6 physical and 12 virtual cores rather than your 4 physical cores of the i5.

The only potential game changer is that 15 MB shared L3 cache, though whether it would counteract your painfully low clock speed, I can only hazard at a guess at for gaming, no.

If you have the cash then go for it, try it and sell on whichever isn't as good. Worst case scenario, you end up back at square one, best case scenario, you get a better system.

Alternatively spend the same amount on a Z77 board + 3570K, or take the Haswell route.

To be honest though given your system, upgrading your CPU won't help in games at all. The only thing I would consider changing at this point is that power supply and add an SSD or two
