I found the Intel Xeon X7560 Nehalem 8-Core Processor on NewEgg.com today. It's only $4000 plus $6 in shipping.

I also found the AMD Opteron 6168 (1.9 gigahertz) 12-Core 115 Watt Processor on NewEgg.com for $770:

I didn't expect to see a 12-Core processor this soon.

ive read a few reviews and the 8 core xeon is far better from what i remember

The Xeon X7560 may be better than the 12-Core Opteron but I don't think any processor is worth $4,000. Sad thing is I bet someone will pay that much for it.

I think it all depends on your app(Seems to me there is a quad socket board for LGA 1567). The app you're running might play better with Intel, or something along those lines(I'm thinking number crunching that does better with xeons than opterons). Besides, maybe some research department has an absurd budget and wants a ginormous e-peen
