You can look at some comparisons on the web of dual and single Xeon vs normal p4s. As you say, the pricing of the boards (particularly) and the 2 CPUs make this solution prohibitably expensive unless you are running the box for business. I mean they are very fast machines, but unless you are running a rendering box or a web/db/application server, I would recommend sticking with a standard single CPU setup as the performance boost that you will see on normal applications (office/games) does not equate to the price difference.compfreak said:intel xeon dual cpu baord are quite expensisve but how gd are they how gd are xeon possesors how fast are they
That is not a serverDual Xeons 3.0GHz
256mb DDR2 400MHz Ram
2x 73GB 10k RPM Ultra 320 SCSI HDD's
Onboard NIC
$2,196 from Dell

if you don't need to put lots of RAM and HDD space on a server you don't need a serverjust because own a server doesn't mean you put that much space on it
Youd be surprised how fast 8GB will dissapear ... crap im sitting here with the combination of Photoshop, Poser and 'Max chewing out 2300MB and rising.8GB Ram? You are crazy.
Huh? If I interpret correctly, the cost of the RAM is something the server Op needs to decide on.8GB of ram costs the same to server owns as it does to everybody else, no?
Dual Xeons arent serious servers.I don't think Dual Xeons are so expensive that the person buying a server with them in it would not care about the ram costing over $1000 alone. You can get this from dell:
True but if you're not running a fileserver then:I configured the system to only have 256mb ram because I was adding the 8GB ram's price seperate and you can put 6 HD's of 300GB on them but just because you own a server doesn't mean you put that much space on it.

True but if you're not running a fileserver then:
1. The system is pointless because it doesnt have enough memory to run as an app/web/terminal etc server
2. The system is overpowered for stupid things like a printerserver
Quite true but if you're doing serious animation stuff (emphasis on serious), the hardware infrastructure is a neccessity and as such, the cost isnt as big an issue anymore since you absolutely need the hardwareI can run Poser, 3D Studio Max and Photoshop all on my PC (allbiet a little slowdown does occur) with 256mb pc-2700 Ram @166MHz. All I was saying is to buy 8GB ram you must be loaded...
