Intel's future

It is to busy milking the market currently.

I would imagine it is going to be the 8 core system. I7 has 4 cores and 8 threads so it seems like the next step.

Reason I am waiting to upgrade...my Q6600 works just perfectly for now and will be a year or more before a 3.2ghz quad is useless ^-^

Hehe, same here, im waiting until someone comes out with a bombshell. I am very excited about the new offerings from amd actually, as they are supposed to have quad channel memory controller here soon, and also 6 core cpu's. Right now intel is too greedy, they are coming out with way too many sockets imo, right now the count is at three sockets, possibly 4 with whatever replaces 775 for the budget market.

I've also looked at these 6 core cpu's. Are they AM3, and will they bring out som 2.8Ghz or 3.0Ghz ones?

Nope, socket F which is a land grid array server socket. You wont see 6 core am3 cpu's for awhile, probably around the time the 800 series chipset is released.

ya, stick with amd! :P

Intel is going to be branching out into the embedded mobile CPU market. They recently partnered with Nokia and will be working with them to develop a new CPU and chipset architecture for mobile phones. They recently bought out Wind River, a company that specializes in embedded systems for mobile phones and many other devices.

As far as personal computer CPUs go, Intel will be releasing Core i5 and Core i3 in Q4 of this year. Core i5 will use a new LGA 1156 socket, come in 2 and 4 core versions, and have integrated controllers for DDR3, PCI-E graphics and DMI. Core i3 will be their new dual core mobile line and have an integrated GPU.

In short, Intel is looking to incorporate functions usually reserved for the motherboard's chipset into the actual CPU. They are also looking to use this new branding convention to simplify comparing CPUs for the consumer. Core i7 will be their top of the line series, Core i5 will be the mid range, and Core i3 will be the lowest range and mobile series.

Where have you found all this info?

I would think the i5 line would see the most concentration of effort at this
point, since it's most likely geared towards mainstream.

i9 comes out at the end of the year. 6 cores. I assume it supports more than the 32 pci-e lanes that the i7 does currently.

The big mistake with the i5 is that only supports 16 lanes.

Does that mean they will have to make new motherboards with the 1156 socket? Intel's going way to complex in my opinion, all they are going to do is confuse consumer's!

Mainstream consumers don't give a crap what socket is in their next pc purchase.

Enthusiasts, on the other hand, obviously have panty wads.

I personally don't think it's a big deal.

I can't see the point in making CPU socket's different unless it's going to improve performance, or improve some aspect!

Yes, definetely, but how is making the i5 a different socket an improvement over the i7 socket?
They are slowly moving all the northbridge aspects into the cpu. P55 will only have x8/x8/x4 sli/crossfire, which sucks since while x8 doesnt limit current gpu's much, x4 will really hinder gpu's.

point taken, proves how much i really know about processor's doesn't it. lol. so if the i5 has faster bus speed's, does this make it a better gaming processor?

it probably does, but we wont know until someone can perform a test and see what happens. I think intel is getting too complicated. They should just stick with one standard socket, and remove some advanced features from their lower end CPU's so that it won't cannabalize their sales of high end stuff.

Interesting note on Intel buying some phone chip company and pairing with nokia... this could come out good, if AMD follows along! It'd be price wars with mobile phones, which is always good news!

I think AMD needs to catch up with intel, but no doubt they are developing something new to wipe the floor with intel.

I have heard that the Core i5's will just be rebadged Core 2 Quads on a different socket. Can anyone confirm this?
