inter OS file transfers?

I am getting a better equipped Laptop (GT 540m and i3-380m), with Windows 7 Home Premium. I am currently running Vista on my DV7 and HP G61. I want to transfer all my Word documents and saved game data between them without using a Flashkey. Would it be possible to transfer these files using a ethernet cable between Vista and 7?

Yes you can, you can either define the ip address and such yourself or let windows do all the hard work either by using the cable directly into one pc to the other or over a router.

last time I did this one computer was hard wired into a router and my laptop was done over wifi and windows did the rest, info showed up under networked pcs, you then need to ensure that both pcs have a username and password and that the folders you wish to share are being shared and then the connected computers come up under the network bit in xplorer, it will then ask you to log on to the pc as you would do if you were using it and it will then display the shared files, then copy and paste, the desired files.

I cant believe this has slipped my mind exactly how to do it defining the ip address and I havent got a way to test it, but I think it is coming back to me, improved networking in windows makes it easy to be lazy lol.

I am not sure if this method works if you just use a cable from one computer into the other, it should do tbh, but the other way is to define the IP address.
Go to network connections and choose the desired adapter and then right click and choose properties and then ipv4 and then configure.

On one computer set the ip as something like 192.168.1.5.

One the other set the IP as 192.168.1.6.

both computers need to have the same subnet which should automatically come up as 255.255.255.0 and leave the default gateway and dns servers blank as they are not relevent unless you want to share and internet connection.
You need to ensure netbios over tcp/ip is enabled, which I think it is in win 7 by default, that is under the wins tab as shown in this ss.

then same as above computer should show up on the network and you need to access it and ensure your files are shared, last time I did this I found it really helpful if both computers had a password as well as a username, ie you need to type a password in to logon to your computer.
Should show up where it says network here.

ok. That seems rather complicated.
What I was planning to do, at least during the transfer, was to take the ethernet cable out of the router and plug it into the newer laptop. In this case, woulnt the computers do something sort of like auto play and discover each other?

easiest thing to do is make both computers in the same workgroup, hook them up the same router (so they are on the same VLAN), and then enable file sharing. Share your folders and use the network browser to mount the shares.

Then just drag and drop files from source to destination.

Thats basically what I was trying to say with the router Idea, but tbh it is only because I have labelled every single step, some of which you probably already know, that it looks complicated it really isnt, it would probably take about 5-15mins

Connect both computer in LAN (with the wire or router) or WIRELESS LAN (router). And then simply use Network Setup Wizard (from first or second computer) from the control panel to share the files between those 2 computers...
Just follow the steps of the Network Setup Wizard...

Cheers!

trying between the ACER and HP for a while, I have it all figured out. Only issue I encountered was that in Vista, the documents being transfered have to be in the public folder. But thats just a few folders that are to be drug and dropped. And I have to use my user name and password on them both. But thats fine.

You can just right click on a folder, or even a whole drive and choose the sharing tab and then tell it to be shared, you don’t need to transfer all the desired docs to the public folder.

I wouldn't suggest sharing a whole drive. Share folders on an individual basis.

True True, I usually just share specific folders, sometimes I share the whole drive because it is just easier (Either because I'm lazy to find to folder or because I want to access the whole) but after I have finished transferring the files I switch it back to non-shared.
