Interchangeable HDD's?

Hi everybody, please bear with me if I ask daft questions using not-so-technical language, I'm something of a novice when it comes to technical stuff.

My query is this:- My desktop is an Emachines 2230, but lately I've been using a laptop - a compaq presario v5000. Now that the laptop is quite literally falling apart, is it possible to put the HDD and the memory chips from it into the Emachines 2230, for extra storage space and to boost the RAM, or would there be compatibility problems?
Sorry again if this is a daft question, it's just that it would make sense to me not to waste the bits from the laptop.

For the hard drive, it will work most likely, but you will have to purchase an adapter. As for the RAM, it will NOT work. Laptop RAM is different size, and so it will not work.
