Interesting hard drive problem or non problem.

I just recieved a computer that needed to be repaired. It is a Dell Vostro running XP. The computer would boot but it would get stuck on the "windows is starting screen". I ran the diagnostics at the F12 screen and it came up failed. So i figured all right, the HD is crap. Decided to run a chkdsk just in case. I did it while working so I didn't pay much attention to it but i think it fixed just a single bad sector. When I got back home it fired up with no problems, i rebooted it a few times and everything seems good. However, I decided to run a diag again and right away it fails. So now I'm a bit confused, it runs like a champ but doesn't pass the diag test. I don't know if I should return the computer back to the person and tell them that it is all set, or do i get a new HD and re-install windows. Any thoughts?

Are you running the drive's manufacturer's diagnostics? If the drive didn't pass the diagnostics, something's wrong with it and needs to be replaced.

thanks for responding. and yea i decided to just get a new drive and clone it while I had the chance. With my luck it will die tomorrow.
