interesting hard drive trouble

My little bros computer has been running bad latley, using a diognostic I figured that it was time to replace the hard drive. I got 2 10gb hard drives from work, I put the first one in his computer and turned it on. It worked fine until the computer booted into windows, then the hard drive started banging. it sounds like the arm inside is bent or something, So i tried the other HDD i got from work. exectly the same thing. booted fine, then started banging. I know the HDD's were good because I pulled them out of working PC's the previous day. any Ideas what could be causing the problem?

Are your hard drives housed in a separate, external case?

I used to have a hard drive that you just slid into a case that was connected to the motherboard. The purpose of the case was to make the hard drive portable, so you could just take the case out (with the hard drive in it) without opening up the whole computer.

If yes, the problem is probably the fan that is part of the case. Try replacing the external case with a brand new one, or take out the case altogether and just connect the hard drive directly to the motherboard.

If no, my only suggestion is to try tightening up the screws.

Are they Western Digital? I used to have an old WD 40 gig that did that after a while. The one I got after warranty does one "bang" about every hour or two.

umm... id say build hima new computer. lol it would cost u $400 for everything except the monitor and such.

Nah Im an aussie. cost me a little more than $400 to build a decent pc.

What gets me is that they are both differant hard drives. One is a Western digital, the other is a seagate. The segate is a small skinny HDD the WD is a bigger one. I dont get it maybe they were on their last leg anyway.
