Internal and External Ip

I need to find out my Internal and External IP. I followed multiple steps, using different sites and approaches, and for some reason, both of these IP's are the same...

Like my Internal Ip is equal to my External Ip. Why is this? Is it because i am using a modem and not a router?
 
If you dont use a router and just connect to your modem, sometimes it will be the same. If you use a router, your IP should be 192.168.X.X or 172.16.X.X or 10.X.X.X everything else is public
 
If i wanted to make a server public, so anyone who knew how to connect to the server could, would this effect anything? Or will i need a router?
 
Well you would have to connect that server directly to the modem. You would want a router if you wanted more than one computer on the network at once. However if you just connect the server to the modem and open the ports you need for the server, you should be able to just type in the IP from any computer
 
OK. I have a Motorola SB5101. Is there any way or any need to port forward it? Its connected directly to my computer also.
 
go to search bar, type "cmd" in there type "ipconfig /all" search for your NIC and it will list all your ip's, to change your 'internal' ip do this:

control panel > - network and sharing > local connection > properties > click on tcp/ipv4 > click on properties

as far as security is concerned I would recommend a router, even your basic router offer more protection than stand alone software on your PC...
