Internet access problems

Hi I'm having a problem that seems to have come out of nowhere. Some time ago, my internet access was fine. Now I don't have any. I seem to connect to my router but that's as far as I get. I tried changes to DNS settings for the TCP/IP address to no avail, so have since set them back to Automatic settings. Anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance.

Check your modem lights to see if you have anything blinking red. What modem do you have?

Hi johnb35, thanks for your quick reply. I'll do that, but I should have mentioned that my wifes and daughters as well as my laptop is working fine. It's my desktop I lost connection with. I'll check the modem anyhow, I guess.

Then you don't need to check modem. Do you connect with a cable or wireless on your desktop? Check device manager to make sure no devices need drivers. Is it possible that you could be infected with something? What web browser do you use? Could be many reasons why you don't have internet. Will try and track it down though.

Open a command prompt and type the following

ipconfig /all and then press enter and tell me what it says for dhcp server and ipv4 address

I connect wirelessly. It's possible that I could have a virus, not sure. I used to have AVAST security, but no virus protection any longer.

And why aren't you using any Virus software? That is your first line of defense. What web browser do you use? Does the wireless icon in the system tray down by the clock tell you that you have internet access? Does it say local connection only? Run the ipconfig command and let me know results.

I typed in ipconfig /all and a black system screen appeared, then filled with some technical data, then disappeared. It doesn't remain long enough to read. It's a quick flash

Every time I execute the ipconfig /all command it flashes the info. The first thing I need is an anti virus software. I don't have one on my laptop. I thought the Windows 10 protection was good enough? Is that a wrong assumption? My desktop runs Windows XP

Since you are running XP, then click on start, click on run, type cmd hit enter. The black box will appear. Then type ipconfig /all and give me the requested info. And since you are using XP, it is very possible that your are infected. So what I need you to do is go into control panel, click on internet options, Click on the connections tab, click on the lan settings button, make sure that use proxy setting is unchecked. If its checked uncheck it.

Wait a minute. You just said windows 10 protection but then said you run XP. Which do you have?

Check the proxy settings in internet options first, make sure its unchecked. If its checked, thats the first sign you are infected.

My issue is with desktop running XP (Professional I think). The Windows 10 is running on my laptop. Sorry for causing the confusion

Does it list an IP address?

Open another command prompt.

type the following and hit enter

ping www.google.com

Should see results like this. Should say 4 sent, 4 received 0 lost
