Internet access problems

So what happens when you try to open firefox? Can you open Internet Explorer and see if you can browse anywhere?

Firefox wont open.

Why didn't you say that in your very first post? The more you tell us the quicker we can help. So you click to open firefox and it won't even try loading? Does Internet Explorer open and are you able to go to any websites with it?

IE crashes. This is an older computer, but I never had internet access issues like this before. Sorry for not being clear. Also, earlier today, in trying to fix this, I ran System restore to a much earlier date. Still no luck.

I am conversing with you thru my laptop, however, it's ony after I post a reply that I see a response from you from an earlier post.
I installed an old version of Firefox and it does not bring forward any web pages I type in the URL

Ok, What I need you to do is download these files from one of your other computers and put them on a usb flash drive and then run them on your xp desktop to check for malware.

1.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.

•Please close all open programs and internet browsers.
•Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
•Click on Scan.
•After the scan you will need to click on clean for it to delete the adware.
•Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
•Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.
•You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

2.

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

•Shutdown your antivirus to avoid any conflicts.
•Very important that you run the tool in this manner:
Right-mouse click JRT.exe and select Run as administrator
Do NOT just double-click it.
•The tool will open and start scanning your system.
•Please be patient as this can take a while to complete.
•On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
•Post the contents of JRT.txt in your next message.

Post screenshots of the logs you get. This will tell us how infected you are if at all. I may have you run other programs but this will give us a good idea.

Have you tried booting to safe mode with networking to see if Firefox works? You boot to safe mode by pressing the F8 key on bootup.

Thanks for your help by the way. I've taken up a lot of your time. You may not see this until tomorrow, however, I have copied both those files to a flash drive and running them now on my Desktop Windows XP computer.

oh and by the way, I did not try booting from safe mode. I shall try that next. I'm having trouble with the adwCleaner. I got a message about re-installing it due to corruption. A Database error. ?? I tried it again, same thing. I shall have to continue with this tomorrow. Early day unfortunately. Thank you so very much with your help and time. Much appreciated. I'll let you know how it goes.

You don't install adwcleaner, you just open the file and let it run. If you are having problems running programs, sounds like you have some windows corruption going on and would need to reinstall windows. Do any of your other programs work correctly?

Hi Johnb35, I thought I'd turn on my PC and give it a quick go, hoping for dumb luck. Dumb, being the operative word. After right clicking this last time, I clicked on open. The program starts. I click on SCAN. Then AdwCleaner says it's loading the databases. One fifth of the way thru I get the following message: Database corrupted. Please uninstall AdwCleaner and download it again. Also and for the first time upon turning on the machine I got this message: Access violation at address 004A55F7 in module WMP54GSv1_1.exe. Read address 00000000. That's I believe refers to my router or card. I'd don't expect to start trouble shooting at this hour, just thought I'd let you know what's going on.

That error message belongs to the wireless card driver. What I would is Uninstaller the current driver and install the latest driver for it sand see what happens.
