internet access via second modem?

Good day all ... I have cable internet service through my ISP. They provided me with a Motorola modem which is attached to the coax cable feed. I want to provide internet service to my children's computers, but becasue they are two floors up, the signal is usually poor. While perusing e-bay and other sites, I've notices that there are a lot of modems like the one provided by my ISP for sale. If I get one and hook it up to the cable line in one of my children's room, would that provide internet access?
Thanks!!

what do you mean to say by signal very poor ?
does that modem have wireless ? if so then you will probably have to do cabling to get to the top floors, not difficult, do the following.
Get a switch, take the utp cable from your modem and plug it into the switch (this will assign IP's)
now get some very long utp cables (plug them into other ports on the switch) pull them up to the top floors.....done !!!

edit : and by the way use trunking on the walls to hide the cables

Thanks for the reply. I hooked the modem up to a wireless router, but the signal is poor (I didn't make that clear in my original post ... sorry). I would like to use hard wiring to connect the computers, but there is no way for me to string the ethernet cable from the basement to the second floor (is that what you were suggesting?). There is a preexisting cable feed, though ... hence my idea to connect a second modem.
Thanks!!
