Internet air card and router

First off, I'm not too good with correct terminology, so bear with me.

My internet is through an air card that I bought through my cell phone company (AT&T actually). Because my home is in the middle of nowhere the signal strength isn't all that wonderful. If I want to use the internet the air card has to be hung from the ceiling in the upstairs to get the most height. This also happens to be in someone else's bedroom.

I usually have the air card connected to the desktop. I'm wondering if it would be possible to connect the air card to a router so I could use a laptop in the basement. Either that or have the router/air card upstairs and move the desktop to the main level.

One of my friends (who is not a tech savvy person by any means) suggested I just get satellite internet. I occasionally need the portability of the air card to use with my laptop on the road and have a difficult time justifying paying for both.

Satellite internet is expensive and to me is not worth it, however, if you are having problems at your house with your aircard then satellite internet may be your only choice. You won't be able to hook up your aircard to a router.
