Internet connect problem

Hey guys,

I just want to start out by saying I'm new to this site.

I am currently having problems connecting to the internet. By the way I use Windows XP with Mozilla Firefox. It happens with internet explorer also.

When I log on the my account on Windows. I get a pop-up from Norton saying something about it not being able to check my e-mail proxy or something like that. If that pop-up comes up, it will not let me on the internet. When I try to pull up a page it says "server not found" in Firefox and "page cannot be displayed" in Explorer.

Now if I put in the command "netsh winsock reset catalog" and then restart my computer, everything is perfect, and that Norton pop-up does not come up. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Now if I log off and come back to the computer 2 or 3 hours later, I have to go through the same process again.

I'm just really tired of having to do this just to get on the internet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I used to use Norton for a long time. And I have personally learned that it typically does not cause anything but problems, especially with Windows file sharing and the like.

I personally don't have a need for a software firewall on any of my computers because my server already has one, and all of the computers are behind it.

I would first Disable/Uninstall Norton and see if the problem goes away.

Thanks for the help guys.

I have already tried disabling Norton.

Maybe I will just have to uninstall it.

Appreciate it.

uninstall Norton, install Kaspersky and use Windows Firewall

Kaspersky is downloaded as a trial but it can become "free" ;)

Norton pours SAND in ur internet connection....terrible AV program

dont forget it is against the forum rules to discuse anything that might concern ways to use programs that are not purchased the correct way

I have McAfee and I use it for one thing, Fridays @ 6:30am, for scans. No Firewall or any of that crap, except for Windows firewall, I have a hardware firewall in my router :D and it works.

What you need to do, get rid of Norton(go to Add/Remove Programs). Get AVG and Spybot Search and Destroy, download HijackThis and use it about every 3 days to a week. Really, five minutes and the know-how to read a HijackThis Log, is really worth it and effective. Just monitor it and research any suspicious activity, that is the best way to keep a clean computer.

google anything suspicious in Hijackthis will drown you with info. I do this once a week to keep mine running smooth

Norton

Well i have to agree with 95% of the world when it come to Norton Antivirus, it is absolutley terrible. What you really need to do is maybe invest in buying the latest McAfee Total Protection package (McAfee works fine) or like others say, download Kapersky (McAfee and Kapersky both run off the same AntiVirus database anyway) so Kapersky is the better deal obviously. Try that and make sure you remove Norton AV completley, because if you are using Vista, it can be quite decieving if you are new to Vista. Stay behind your Windows Firewall for sure, no need to download any of the free extra firewalls, because if any it will make your windows firewall more vunerable.

Make sure that your computer has the correct settings too, make sure that in your 'Internet Settings' > 'Connections' > 'LAN Settings' - check that the 'Detect Proxy Settings' is enabled. Also make sure that if you want to keep Norton AV for some bizarre reason that on your windows firewall that you have allowed Norton to go through your firewall (Giving it access to the Internet. Don't forget that on you firewall you MUST let UPNP run through your firewall.

Hope this is a bit of help for you, and others,

Chris

I completely removed Norton last night and downloaded AVG.

Everything was good last night but when I came to get on the internet this morning I still had to put in the command "netsh winsock reset catalog".

Any other ideas?

Thanks guys.
