Internet Connecting

I want to connect my PC's internet temporarily to my laptop.
Just got used laptop from my daughter. HP Pavillion ze2000 with XP Home.
PC is Dell Dimension E521. Vista Home Premium. Internet is provided by Comcast. I have a modem through them but no router. I know I need a router, but cant get one now. Want to temp. borrow from PC. When I disconnect ethernet and hook into Laptop, it shows I have it connected, but when it looks for IP address is when I run into a snag.
Any suggestions.

Have you tried assigning the computer it's own IP address???
Have you tried using the same settings as your Desktop PC????

The easiest way would buy a router. If i may ask, why can't you get one?
