Internet connection keeps dropping

I have a netgear wgr614v7 router. I have one PC connected hardwire to the router and one laptop connected wirelessly. Also I have a Xbox360 hardwired.

No matter which one I am using I get a dropped connection for a few minutes. I then refresh the page or reconnect (depending what I am doing) and the connection is back. Some days it seems to work fine all day, others I can't even get a good fix of online.

I have attempted to google my way to an answer, though I have come out more confused. What happened to the good ol days' of pluggin in the phone jack and away you go! j/k

On my google adventure I came across talks of open ports clogging up your router or computer (forgive me if get this all wrong). So I ran "netstat -an" from the command prompt and got a list of open ports?? It came up with a lot of "listening" TCP connections.

So heres my question. Is this normal/OK? Let me know if any of this is on the way to my problem if you would be so kind.

Well, if i'm not mistaken Netstat will only show you what's going on on your local machine, not actually what ports you have open on your router. You'd have to get into the configuration to figure that out. You're going to have open ports on your pc because when ever you do something online a port has to be open in order to do it.

As far as your loss of internet connection, what kind of internet connection are we talking here. Are you running through a cable or dsl modem? Are we talking about a fiber connection. It's sounding to me like your router may be going bad (since you're seeing this across the board on all of your machines) or perhaps a problem with your actual internet connection. More information will help us pin point the most likely problem.

This seems to improve my connection to xbox live (at least i find games on MW2 3x as fast), but i am unable to use the internet on the computer while the setup is configured in this way. I have also noticed that my connection seems to drop out about every 10-20 minutes (the activity light goes out, and so does the DSL light), which basically brings me back to square one, as although i can find games easily enough, i cannot stay in them for an extended period of time. This can get VERY frustrating!

If your DSL light is going out its time to take a look at the wiring in your house and give your internet service provider a call. Typically DSL is setup so that you have to put filters on all of your phones because the digital signal is at every jack in your house. You can cut down on background noise on your line a lot by running a dedicated line from the box on the outside of your house to the jack that your modem is plugged into. You'll need your ISP to come out and install a splitter that separates voice and data at your box otherwise this won't do any good. Essentially what this setup gives you is one jack in the house that is dedicated for data and the rest dedicated to voice with complete separation. If you get your house setup like this and you're still having connection issues you can pretty much assume at that point that the problem is elsewhere and is the responsibility of your ISP to repair.

Ok, so I went for the simplest solution first. I upgraded my router and so far all seems well.

It's been a week and no drops yet.

Thanks for the info. Sorry about the lack of information about ISP. I am running a cable modem.
