Internet connection sharing

I really need to establish Internet connection sharing on my network but I'm really stuck. Here's the situation. My current ISP is really acting up lately, so I'm trying to use a Verizon USB modem. My main computer runs Windows 7, but for some reason I cannot get the modem or the software to work properly. It really conflicts with other critical software programs. I also have a laptop which runs Windows XP Pro, and the modem works perfectly fine on that system. What I need to do is configure the laptop so that it will allow its connection to be shared, and then to be able to connect my Windows 7 desktop to it. I can only seem to find information about a network where all the computers are either running Windows XP or 7, or where the host computer runs Windows 7 and the client is Windows XP. My situation is the opposite of that. Any suggestions?
 
Bridging sounds like a promising solution. However I have one question. First let me explain the situation in more detail. As I said before, the computer I want to connect to the Internet with is my laptop. It has an ethernet and wireless adapter. Those are the two connections I will be bridging. Now, I will need to connect my desktop to the laptop. My desktop does not have a wireless connection. I have a ethernet cable going from it to the router. If I bridge the connections on my laptop, can I connect my desktop to the router and then wirelessly connect from the router to my laptop?
 
That should be possible if your router doesn't have or allows you to turn off ap/ client isolation.

Your router also provides dhcp for the ip settings. But you want to get an ip from the dhcp on the laptop after you setup bridging. So you might have to fiddle around with the ip settings. I'm not sure if the laptop will automatically provide dhcp after setting up bridging.

if you really want to do that :

share the internet via laptop's wifi, you could manually do it or use programs like connectify
set bridge / repeater bridge on the router
connect the router to your desktop

or you could simply share the internet via laptop's LAN
then pull a cable from laptop to your desktop, no need for router ;)
