Hi guys i'm new here & have my first question!

Me and my dad have a computer each and connect to the internet via the same modem 56k. If he and i are both on the internet and say i'm gaming online his slows or sometimes dissapears completely. Why is this happening? Is there any way to stop it happening because he keeps on threatening to unplug my pc from the internet and that wouldn't be good!

If both systems are connecting with the same line there's your main problem. Your bandwidth is cut greatly especially when playing online or running some other program like a system scanner. A residential router would put you on a separate channel rather then the obvious sharing of the limits placed by using just one 56k modem. Or you could use a different phone number to connect separately. Your best option is to move up to DSL to avoid headaches and see an increase from 56k to 512k! A dedicated line rather then dialup.

now days fast internet connections doesn't cost too much! .It depends on the country where you live.
so get a DSL or something faster.
be sure that your dad or you self don't use the p2p programs.
If you use them then you have to configure the connections and some setting in the program. P2P programs slow download the internet speed if you dnt know how to configure them.

If you are gaming online most of the game servers are geared for those with fast connections due to the imense sizes seen in game maps on the newer ones out. DSL will still go right past the so called hi speed dialup non sense they advertise. Rates on DSL setups have been coming down. But often it has been observed that going with wired and not wireless prevents problems. I've heard the headaches from dsl techs stating they wish they were back working with hard wired due to problems seen with newer wireless.
