internet disconnects

I have been unable to access internet for longer than ten minutes for the last two months. Every time IE or firefox are unable to work, though my Netgear CG814WG gateway modem says it is connected. If I reboot my computer it will reconnect again for a few minutes. Also my laptop works on wireless all the time with no problems. One other thing I found strange was, I work from home using VPN and the same computer that disconnects usually will stay connected as long as I am connected to VPN.

The computer that I am experiencing problems with has Windows XP and is wired directly to the modem
 
i have the same problem. i've found a temporary solution. everytime that you experience the problem, go to Run-> type "cmd" -> type "ipconfig" in the window that appear. that should get it working for some time. it's a bug that XP has. quite a number of people have that problem. hope the solution works for u.
 
well, the people who reported the problem had sp2, so did i. I tried upgrading to SP3 but the problem didnt go away.
