Internet doesn't work via switch.

Hello everybody.

I have a problem. I have a Dell Inspiron 2500 laptop and it connects to the internet perfectly well via an ethernet cable directly from the modem. However, when I use a switch (which I need since there is more than one computer using this modem) it simply does not connect, it says `a network cable is unplugged`.

I have tried several cables, different ports on the switch but still nothing. The light to the corresponding port number also is not lit when connected to the laptop.

It is a rather old computer, but if anyone has any suggestions I'd be most grateful.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe something disabled in BIOS?? I have no Idea and this kind of problem leaves you not knowing where to start:confused:
I have the local mayor breathing down my neck, it's his laptop, HELP!

Guys if you have no clue, try to to give advise.

A switch does not connect to your ISP, a router does. If your modem does not have the ability to connect with the ISP, then you need a router. When you plug your PC into the modem the pc makes the connection. When you plug the switch in, it is unable to.

Make sure you dont have a router, that it is actually a switch you have.

Thanks for the replies, It could have been insufficient power to the switch since the power in the building is a tad dodgy. The make was Zyxel, I tried a Surecom switch and it worked perfectly. The guy was happy 'cause it was cheaper :P

Weird though..
