Im running Windows XP home
on a p4 sys

I use mozilla firefox as my browser.

Internet explorer has given me an error message that will not go away.

Cannot find http:///* make sure the path or internet address is correct.

These are things Ive tried so far......

Ive shut down all the programs running in my task manager (that I can shut down).

rebooting the system

deleted all items from my start up

can anyone give me some advice on how I might get rid of this annoyance.

In need of help:confused:

Using the msconfig utility you can re-enable one at a time wth system restarts inbetween to see what the problem is. A bad install of software can sometimes result in seeing IE problems. This can happen when you go to registry online during the installation where something hangs. Another thing you can still run includes a personal firewall where you decide what to allow or deny. It cleans more data miners and adwares better then AdAware apparently from what has been seen here while both can be recommended.

Spyware Terminator is a freeware found at http://www.spywareterminator.com/

Lavasoft's AdAware SE Personal is also free at http://www.lavasoft.com

Grisoft besides having their free edition antivirus tool AVG 7.5 also bought out another popular "bug remover" known as Ewido. You can try the two of those out as well as the others if the step by step method fails to work. These two(AVG 7.5 - AVG Anti-Spyware Remover) are available at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-spyware-free

Well thanks I tried that I installed spywareterminator

However the message still remains.

This problem is more annoying than anything else it does not seem to effect my applications.

I would like to be rid of this message however.

Thanks for trying!

something new to ad I decided to open IE. well it freezes upon opening and freezes all windows open within the IE window including menu items other open windows error messages etc.

Like the computers bogging low on resources yet its not.

I don't understand Ghandolf!

Time for a fresh download and save of IE 7 if you are still running IE 6. This may help when you start enabling one thing at a time to see if problems are still seen or with the current IE only. But it sounds like a removal and fresh installation of IE will correct that. First download the setup file to a temp folder and then uncheck the IE listing in the add/remove Windows components area of the add/remove programs. Once totally removed start the installer to setup a fresh copy of IE.

Apparently you missed one item when you mentioned having disabled all of the startups. What kind of item was seeing this?

To tell you the truth I'm not exactly sure I shut down all start ups that were not in my start up list. Then I shut down a couple of services. Tings that were not in my start up menu were things like InCD, MSSMSG. HPCOM ( Hewlett Packard stuff.)
Real Player, ATI stuff.

Because I elected to shut everything off except micro soft services I'm not sure who the offender was but I know that the problem is lying in wait for me to figure out which one and delete it or reinstall whichever the case.

The funny thing is this all started after running a winzip file.

Thank you for you your interest in my problem It made me think a bit deeper about it....that helps me thanks.

Knowing the precise one disabled will allow you to either remove it totally or perform a removal for fresh installation if it saw a bad install the first time. If you installed too new a version of the Catalyst you can remove that and go with an older update for example. But the tools at those links are still good to keep onhand for those unknowns.
