Internet Explorer Errors

I built my system about 2 years ago and lately I am getting periodic Internet Explorer errors which caused IE to close. I re-formatted the drive and re-installed the OS (XP Home Edition) thinking this would solve my problem and eliminate any of the programs that my kids have installed over the last couple of years. I have also let Live Update do it's thing in hopes up the upgraded software may eliminate the problem. Now it happens more frequently. I installed Firefox and get a similar error.

Here is the error for IE:
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000

Here is the error for FireFox:
AppName: firefox.exe AppVer: 1.8.20051.11116 ModName: firefox.exe
ModVer: 1.8.20051.11116 Offset: 00103dc6

I am running a home built system with a 40G Western Digital HD with virtually no other software installed on the machine.

Could this be hardware or memory related?

Hmmm

For a minute I thought I knew what your problem was, but if its happening with Firefox too then you must have a hardware error. The error appears in a popup box right? Are you sure it doesn't specify a certain .dll file in the error as well?

Anyway, it's possible that you might need to check the drivers for your ethernet modem if you have one. And try rolling back internet explorer to version 5 if possible, and are you trying this on Service Pack 1 or 2? If it's 2, try reformatting and leaving it at 1. Service Pack 2 causes problems with some PCs.
 
Here's a couple more error codes. They both have dll files however they are not the same. I can have IE open and Firefox at the same time and only one gets an at one time. (which ever one is currently being viewed gets shut down)

ModVer: 6.0.2900.2769 Offset: 000d7eb8


AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: pubmod.dll

Do you think updating the drivers on my ethernet card are in order?

If one was to un-install XP's service pack 2-would the system go thru an abrupt change? Would the OS become unstable? Would one incurr error messgaes? Is there a right way or wrong way in the unistall process...

log on as adminstrator, create a restore point and then unistall SP2?
