Internet explorer popups

Internet explorer is not even open (just firefox), and an internet explorer window will pop up with the following text: "Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page? PRESS ESCAPE OR CLOSE THIS ALERT"
When I open up task manager, I see that "iexplore.exe" is running, even though the GUI doesn't appear to be open. Deleting the iexplore process removes the popups. (Also, when I close IE after opening it, the iexplore process is still running, is this normal?)

I did a quick search on google but didn't find anything that helped. I will run a virus scan and probably reinstall IE. Has anyone ever had this problem?

BTW I'm using XP with IE version 7.0.5730.13

I would be inclined to stop the iexplore process first rather than clicking anything, which you may be doing anyway.

The virus scan sounds a good idea. Hold off in the IE reinstall for now. If it is malware and you cannot get rid of the problem, this thread should go to the "Computer Security" section of the forum.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com but DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Thanks for the replies.

I will have to install IE again then...
What If I'm running Windows 7, do I still need to keep IE? (or does this only apply to XP and earlier?)

I do believe IE is still integrated into windows 7 and you will have issues disabling it. Did you have the pop up blocker enabled in Internet Explorer? It also could be software that you had installed.

you will need explorer in windows 7. I wouldn't worry much if ya install it. likely clear your problem. just don't do a quick format. do a full format during the installation and wipe clean. its done. same applies if reinstalling XP. not quick format.

Thanks for the replies. I will reinstall IE and make sure pop-up blocker is on. I don't plan on reformatting the HDD and reinstalling Windows. No pop-ups have appeared since I uninstalled IE, so it must have been a problem with IE or maybe it was having a conflict with another program.

IE was reinstalled (I'm pretty sure the OS reinstalled IE automatically, because I didn't do it myself, and I don't think anyone else living here did either).

Anyways, the pop-ups are gone, but now instead of pop-ups, I'm hearing sounds (kind of like the sound you hear when you press F7 (spell check) in MS word and the dialogue box appears). The pop-ups have basically been replaced by these sounds.

I created a startup list with HJT, maybe there is something out of the ordinary in it (not sure). Thanks.
