hi, i have a laptop downstairs with wifi and just set up a pc upstairs with linux, the pc doesn't have wifi and is nowhere near the modum, is there some way i can send internet to it?

Yes it is possible. You would set up the network type as ad-hoc rather than infrastructure and enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing).

What flavour of Linux do you have and what OS is running on the laptop?

Bare in mind the laptop must be on for the computer upstairs to get internet. Because of this and for simplicity's sake, it may be better to get a range extender

It acts as an inbetween, amplifying the wireless signal. The signal from your WAP that is connected to your router will go to the range extender, which will then send out the same signal, as your laptop would do if you set it up for ad-hoc and ICS, only you don't need to bother turning it off and on and you don't have to fiddle with as many settings
