Internet keeps dropping out...

Buy-it PC

New Member
Okay, here's what I have... my client has five physical PC systems attached, they use DSL by AT&T, they are using a modem and a router a D-Link DI-614+ router and a 8/Port switch.

From out of nowhere... they lose internet connections, they have to unplug the router and modem and BAM! It works again!

Does anyone have an idea what might be the issue... could it be the DSL Modem or is a PC the issue?!

I am open to hear any suggestions?
:D

mine does that sometimes... but not very often.... so... i would so it could be a modem issue.

Just had it happen to me :P Chances are it's your ISP. I know ours was really bad at one point, causing our old Linksys router to freak out (complete loss of internet connectivity for about 5 minutes). After about a month, they cleared things up and it started working fine again.

Assuming your using a wired connection, there's probably not much you can do. You could try updating any firmware to see if that helps.

Internet Drops out...

So, maybe AT&T has an update on the modem... I was thinking just that... it seems to be happening more often than usual... So, I will get on the horn with them tomorrow when I go back over there and find out what the story is with it.

I have a feeling you guys are right, that the modem is the problem and nothing else.

Thanks!:)

I have the same problem. Every 3-4 days I need to unplug the power from my modem (its a motorola cable modem and is about 4 years old) and wait a minute or 2 and then power it back up then it works fine. Its a total pain, but at least I can fix it.

Mines even worse, seems like whenever there is a lot of activity after a dead period, it restarts. Probably does it about 5 times a day.

Try different cable

Well that is not good...:cool:

Nope, I've tried everything on my end, we never had this problem until we switched from a static IP to a dynamic IP. I was reading over the logs on the modem and it appears it resets when it doesn't get a response from the DNS servers, so it must be something on their end.

Trouble with network...

WOW! It seems it happens often than not, merely because the modem (in most cases I see here) is too old. My customer's modem is old too... maybe 4 years at least. They have to reset the modem at least 5 times a day as well... depending on the traffic and the busy schedule of things going on.

So, you guys think that if we replaced the modem it might fix it? Or not?!

i was going to say it could be your modem no being able to take it.... but at least you know what the problem... change back to a static IP.

Trouble with interrnet dropping out.

Well, they always have been DHCP... furthermore, I am also having an issue with the network not seeing printers... it's the funniest thing! Guess I will post a new thread.

The DI series are garbage. Buy a decent router and your problem will be solved.
Actually, the router isn't the problem... the problem has been going on before I put the DI in the equalization.

They had an SMC router before, but it was running slow. And DSL kept dropping out... before I put the DI in place.

It's still a piece of crap and it should never have been put in the "equalization" to begin with.

Second, if the DSL is dropping, look for an alarm system, a phone line plugged into a satellite receiver or cable box, an answering machine, fax, etc. Also, change the DNS servers to something like Level3. Also check the age of the house to ensure no bad wiring. Take all PCs and that POS router out of the equation and hook one PC directly to the modem to see if the problem persists (a new network cable wouldn't hurt for the purpose of the experiment).

Regardless of the router being CRAP! It is working nevertheless...

Besides, there isn't any alarm system, or a phone line plugged into a satellite receiver or cable because it isn't inside a house! There isn't a fax machine attached to this line, because they have a separate FAX line all together!

The problem even persisted prior to the DI router, they had an SMC router, and it did the same! But, changing the DNS servers to something like Level 3 is interesting. But, the idea of hooking one PC to the modem directly might be an answer to try and determine if the modem is the issue. It's what I'm betting on, actually that the problem is there!?

This is a business? If so, do they have a PBX system? And are you sure they don't have an alarm system? Alarm systems go through the phone line to be monitored. You wouldn't see the wire for that off the bat, they're usually pulled through the wall.

Most certainly a faulty modem could be the problem. Have you watched the LEDs on the front of it? Have you called the ISP on their behalf and asked them what errors have been recorded in the logs?

Yes, a beauty career academy, so no they don't have a PBX system, or alarm that I am aware of... but it will be something I shall investigate, and as for calling the ISP I've done that before, and we sped up the speed of access... but perhaps the modem is the trouble maker... I will check these other things and let you know.

Thanks!

They more than likely do have a PBX actually. That's the digital system that gives them multiple phone lines, call direction, etc. I don't know a lot about them, but I know that somewhere in all that mess is where the analog line comes from for the DSL.

I'm not really sure if a problem could arise from there so it probably wouldn't be the first place I'd look.. But I mention it just in case.
