Internet not Working on Laptop

My friend has a Dell xps laptop that is relatively new and now the internet has stopped working on it. He can no longer connect it via modem or wifi when the internet in his house and various other places is up and running. I have not seen the laptop yet myself, but I was wondering if any of you had any ideas as to why it would do this. Thanks in advance.

Does it say its conncted and just can't browse? If it says its not connected on both wireless and ethernet then its sounds like hardware issue, motherboard.

Manakore is an RL friend of mine. And from how we was describing it to me earlier today, it sounds like the guy's whole networking capabilities on his computer just went poof! and disappeared. Which may be a mobo issue I don't really know, but my guess was that the IP address somehow got set to a static one that wasn't his and made it so it wouldn't work no matter if he connected with ethernet or wireless(I had a problem like that once). We are not sure.

Could be infected with a bad proxy server address. And as long as you obtain ip address and dns address automatically, it should connect. When you get access to the laptop, connect to a network and do a ipconfig /all and list all data given.

Alright I think whenever Manakore gets home he will get on and check out this thread(since he will probably be the one fixing the laptop), but I'll let him know.

Did you get "media disconnected" message? When you did the ipconfig /all and hit enter you should have gotten a full page of different settings listed. Any lines of text show up? If not, then there is definately something wrong with this laptop. Go into device manager and make sure drivers for wireless and lan is still installed correctly, look under network adapters.

Yeah I plugged the laptop into my router and it still says it is not connected - no connections are available.

I opened a command prompt and typed ip config and all it says is Windows Ip Configuration.

What about device manager? Does this laptop have a wireless switch? Is it on? What make and model is the laptop? besides XPS, need model number.

We did a full system restore and it now works. So we will see how long that lasts, hopefully we are good though.
