internet on ubuntu

Indeed, more information would be beneficial. Are you being fed your internet via ethernet or USB? (as DSL USB modems take a lot more time and effort to get working. My old DSL modem used to be a nightmare to get working on Ubuntu but I did get it working and it is possible with a little time and effort).

oh man this is an accidental piece of scrap, im sure that i posted an almost same msg under the same title with more detail.
anyway...

it's wired, via ethernet, and modem IS setup to use DHCP (as far as I know)

Remind me if your network card is onboard or PCI etc.. etc.. Might be worth quickly posting on their forums to see if your specific network card is supported. As usually when being fed your internet via ethernet it normally works immediately as Ubuntu has a very good detection rate when it comes to driver / hardware support.

So if you could give me the make and model of your network card I will do a quick lookie into whether or not your network card is supported (I'll post on their forums for you too if you prefer, although you'll have to bare with me as I'm not at home right now so internet access is limited).

CF members are extremely helpful, but you may want to try the Ubuntu Forums because they will have an answer for you in a matter of minutes when it comes to networking help.

Oh and btw, it appears that ubuntu detects the nic correctly, it says that network or LAN is available or something like that...but i just can't access the internet :(

Forgive me for not having replied about this yet. Haven't been at home for 12 days and won't be returning until tonight so I will have a quick look then. Although if your NIC is being detected then it has to be a OS side issue. Check to see if your computer has been assigned an IP via the network etc to make sure that the auto assign feature has worked and what not. Also, as mentioned by ukulele_ninja, you may want to quickly post this up on their forums too as you'd get faster help by those guys as they basically do this for a living lol.

you have to turn it on, sillypants :P
on the top task bar thingy (i dont remember where) there's something that you can click to turn on "Wired Connection".

lol I hope for his sake is isn't something that simple :P. Best way to check if it is on, can you log onto your router?
