Internet problem, please help!

I bought a new computer, and this time i connected it to my cable modem via the ethernet connection. On my old computer i used USB.

Anyway, my internet doesn't always work. And when it does work its pretty sluggish. I'm on a 10mb connection so it shouldn't run as slow as this. And it randomly disconnects and i can't do anything to get the connection back. The lights on my modem are correct all the time, even when it disconnects and i can't repair the connection. I can't do anything apart from wait. Then eventually it comes back, and this happens randomly all day. Sometimes i have good days, other times it hardly ever works.

I tried using USB and it didn't even work. BUT when i tried out my old computer (connected by USB) the internet was fine!

Do you guys know what the problem could be? I rang my ISP they are sending an engineer around. I'm hoping its the modem and he can just replace it. Because on the phone they said they can't see any problems with the connection. (But it was working at this time, typical)

Any help appreciated please!

If the usb connection wasn't established on the new system you will probably need a trip into the bios for a setting there to enable usb support. Have you tried anything else on the usb ports to see if that's where the problem is? For Lan you will need to see if that is enabled and drivers are installed correctly for that. The random disconnects could be the modem itself if that is seeing a problem.

To get the usb side of this working prepare a folder on the hard drive to store the drivers needed there. Go into the control panel and choose the add new hardware wizard and manually choose the new device to install. When you get to the list choose network adapter and browse to that folder with the needed drivers. If the correct driver is present Windows will then detect that and copy what it needs from there.

That's a weird problem. Drivers are necessary for it to work with USB however, nothing is needed when using ethernet connection. It should work as soon as you plug it in. Sounds like it's a setting on your PC

If the board's drivers didn't go on good when Windows was first installed that will need an update from the support site to correct. You can also look in the device manager to see if anything there has a yellow mark next to it. A look in the bios to see if the Lan is enabled is another thing to throw your way.

Thanks for the help. It appears the internet wasn't working on my other computer either today through USB. And i have changed nothing on my old computer and it suddenly stops working.

This reinforces the idea that its the modem, it must be. Well i hope it is. Engineer is coming around later today, hopefully he can replace my moden and everything is ok. If not, i'll defintley try driver thing.

Haha.. it was the modem. The guy has put in a new one, and its a much better model and it seems to be working fine! Yay! :D

Thanks for your help though guys :)

I was going to suggest, if you built your own computer, that you didn't connect up all USB ports in on your new computer. But, it works now, great.
