I have a 20Mbps connection advertised by my ISP and i run a speed test and im getting a download a speed of ~8Mbps. Now i know that is not right and i need help fixing this problem. I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router but my computer is wired to it.

20Mbps is the max. 8Mbps isn't bad at all - I just tested mine here and I only got 1.7Mbps... and my connection is satisfactory to me.

Reset your modem and router and your speed may increase. If not, you may want to call your internet provider to see if there is a problem on your line.

My connection was running at ~15Mbps with this setup then I reset my router and that is when it dropped down to ~8Mbps. I can try to reset my router again but I don't think it is going to bring it back up to where it was before. I just got off the phone with my ISP and they said everything is fine with my connection and should be running at full speed. I'm wondering if there is settings within the router that I need to change to get the speed I had before.

I know that 20Mbps is the max speed and I will never get that but only getting 8Mbps when I'm paying for 20 is not really something I want to do.

Try www.speedtest.net when you test your speed. Also, Try plugging in your modem right to your computer and by pass the router, This will tell you if it has something to do with the router our not. Who is your ISP? Also, Check to make sure no torrent programs are open, our any kinda programs that will use the internet this could also effect the speed test results.

i believe this is cable internet not standard through the phone line
the router you posted comes up as a cable router
please log on to your router using its ip address to find this out:
hold windows key and r > type in cmd > type in ipconfig in the black box> then look for the default gateway> type that number into your internet browser.

this should bring up the router homepage and it should state what rate your are synced at
if synced around 15 Mbs and there are no other programs using the connection
hook the computer up with a wire to the router and rerun speedtest
there may have been and influx of customers in our area meaning the connection has slowed and will probably speed up at night.
have you been downloading alot using p2p , eg torrent, if so your connection may be being throttled

if no success

try following these instructions

http://www.computerforum.com/131398-important-please-read-before-posting.html

and run for malware/virus's

if you are synced below that number

have you been constantly resetting the router? causing a intermittent connection?this can cause sync rate to drop

either way this will be something the isp will have to sort out if sync rate has dropped by half in a few days it is a matter they need to take up as they owe you explanation as to why

It could be that someone in your neighborhood is hogging all the bandwidth. Anything from watching T.V to surfing the net can slow down people on the same street.

Thank you guy for all your help. I've come to figure out that my router is the problem and there is nothing a can do with this router to increase my speed so i am now looking into buying a new router. Any suggestions?

I agree, try the router at a friends house to verify if its the router or not. I have a feeling its your internet service or possible modem.

I've hooked my computer up to my router and the connection speed was fine so it's not my ISP or my modem. I have been doing research on my router and everything i have found says my router is too old to handle the connection speeds. I will go try my router at my friends house but I anticipate the same issues I'm having here.

Yeah, your router is only capable of wireless "B" not "G". So in your case, an upgraded wireless G or N router would help you.
