Internet speed confusing me

Hi ,

I was just wondering if someone could help me with something.

I don't know much about computers so please make your answers easy for me :P

Well i just got a new computer last week and the people i got it from aren't really very helpful. Anyway so it came with a built in wifi card but when it connects to the internet it says it's connection speed is 11Mbps and when it loads up internet sites it takes ages.
So my bf told me i should try pluggin in my old wireless plugin thing to it so i did and the speed went up to 54Mbps(Which it was on my old pc) . But it still wasn't going very fast.
I tried to play my world of warcraft games but need to still download the patches so i started that and it's downloading them really slowly. I've still not finished one of them.

I remember on my old computer it only took an hour max per patch. On the new one it's been about 6 hours and it's only at 70%. So i don't understand why my old plugin wireless thing doesn't work on my new comp but it does on my old one. Or why the new wireless card isn't working.
So i decided while i wait for answers i'd download my new warhammer game on my old computer. But everytime i try to dowload it it says problem getting connected , check networks. Also the speed on my old computer works fine until i click download on the warhammer downloader , it goes from 54Mbps to 11Mbps. I don't know if the two problems are related or not , but i would really appreciate some answers.

Thanks ,

Nicola

thats not your actual internet speed. thats the speed between your pc and the router. 11 is the speed of the old wifi standard called B and 54 is the speed of the newer standard called G.

the speed between your router and the internet is whatever you pay for, usually only 1mb - 6mb, so which wifi adapter you use wont make a dfifference.

ok, well do you know what would be stopping the new computer from going as fast as the old one? even though i have put them in the same place and the new one says it's got full signal just like the last one.

Try restarting the router and Modem. Just un-plug them, then plug them back in. Everything should reconnect when it is done in 2-3 min.

Well problem is my dad is strict won't let me do that and he's on his comp downstairs. But the internet gets turned off at the plug every night so, it would be restarted every day . And this has been like this for about a week now
