Internet speed slowed down real fast!

Okay... I'm on a cable modem where I used to get up to 300kbps downloads usually, to like 10kbps...

I don't use a router/network, proxy server... I'm a single computer connected on an ethernet modem to my ISP...

I tried releasing more ports since I have xp sp2, but that didn't work.

Some connection scans on the web detected that alot of packets are being lost and some ports cannot be reached by them - connections get lost about 10 steps before they reach my computer. I haven't run this test before my comp slowed down, so I don't know if this is the reason.

Only thing I can think of is someone is blocking traffic to my computer or my ISP is having problems... What else could be wrong?

Hmmm... It seems like when I download from sites, I still get up to 300kbps... but when I'm on a p2p program or browsing the web(both Mozilla and IE) is speed is tremendously slow... And web browsing is slower when I'm on p2p... on p2p, I can only download one file at a time at a maximum of 20 kbps...

Download this and play around with the settings and see if you get any change if not click on file in the left corner and restore settings to windows default , program helped me with packet loss!

Anyway, I used winsock xp fix program, and it didn't seem to fix anything. I hope it didn't make things worse.

Link wont post for some reason copy and paste it and it will take you to the websight scroll down to bottom of page and on the left you will see bow marked shortcuts...download tcp/ip optimizer !

Appreciate the help! Using the TCP/IP optimizer (I just clicked the best performance or optimal setting button since I don't know what each setting means) brought by P2P back up to high speeds! It must have opened up the approporiate ports that sp2 closed up. And downloading from sites is still high speed as always.

However, web browsing is still slow... :( Can you give me the settings I can input manually to bring web browsing speed back up too?

PS: SP2 was integrated into my Windows XP, so I don't think I can get rid of it.

I tried it out as well, im on a DSL 768k connection. But for some reason my NIC card and slow computer never got me above 400kbps.

Used the "optimized" TCP/IP settings or w/e they are called and sped internet up back to "normal" speeds like i had it on my main rig.

Your download speed : 689625 bps, or 673 kbps.
A 84.1 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 111145 bps, or 108 kbps.

Very kewl. I thought this computer was just too slow lol.

What web browser are you using raster? If you are using IE I have a real simple tweak that will make it faster than firefox if you are using firefox I cannot help you but I guess there is a tweak for that also!

HAPPY SURFING you will notice a huge increase in how fast your pages load from websites now!

I am using Firefox but no more problems here, buddy.

I opened up the ports that were closed by sp2, used tcp/ip and winsockfix programs you recommended, and now my p2p, bittorrent, and web browsing is very fast like it was before!

Turns out that the reason for slowing web browsing was that when I had torrent running I was uploading too much bandwidth. Once I put this lower, I'm not having any more problems.

Thanks again!
